CINE Newsletter, July 2010
A Letter from CINE President Rita Mullin

As the new president of CINE, I welcome you to the latest edition of the CINE newsletter.
Please take a look at the names of the winners of our Spring competition. It includes well known names in the business as well as students whose names I know you'll be seeing in the credits of major productions in the future.
The call for entries for our Fall competition will be open in August. Start thinking now about what productions you want to enter. More information is available in our "News and Notes" column, or you can email info@cine.org with questions.
The 2009 Masters Award winners as well as Johnathan Rodgers (Leadership Award), Erik Nelson (Trailblazer) and Susan Lacy (Lifetime Achievement) were honored at our Spring Gala at the French Embassy in Washington, D.C., in June. A wrap-up of that memorable evening is also here.
But CINE is not only about awards. We're also about offering working professionals information to help them achieve. I hope you'll take a few moments to read an important article on how to avoid pitfalls when insuring off-shore productions.
I would like to welcome four new members to the CINE board: Robyn De Shields, a marketing and event management consultant; Chris Finnegan, vice president of communications at Discovery Communications; Steve Sadicario, an agent at N.S. Bienstock; and Mike Stiller, executive producer at History. Each brings a unique set of skills and experience to the Board, and I know CINE will be stronger for their contributions.
Finally, a special thank-you to our outgoing president, Donald Thoms, for his leadership of CINE for the last three years. Donald has set a high bar for all of us. I'm delighted that he continues to serve on the Board's Executive Committee.
I look forward to working with you in the coming year and I hope that you will reach out to me or any other member of our Board with your ideas about how we can make CINE a stronger and more useful organization for producers and other professionals in the film and television business.

Presenting the Spring 2010 CINE Golden Eagle Award Recipients!
We are delighted to announce that CINE has named the winners of the Spring 2010 Golden Eagle Competition. CINE has been recognizing excellence among emerging and established film and television professionals for 53 years.
Over those five decades, CINE has displayed a remarkable knack for the early recognition of talent. The Golden Eagle recipients for the Spring 2010 include now-highly successful filmmakers whose early films won CINE Golden Eagles, such as renowned filmmaker Ken Burns - winner of a CINE Golden Eagle for his first film in 1981 and a recipient this year for The National Parks: America's Best Idea - and legendary documentarian Albert Maysles, who executive produced the Golden Eagle Award-winning independent film Four Seasons Lodge. Washington, DC-based Aviva Kempner won for her acclaimed documentary Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg, and The Jim Henson Company continued a CINE-winning tradition that began in 1967 - with Jim Henson himself.
CINE is also proud to recognize several young, emerging filmmakers, such as Ruth Fertig, a student at the University of Texas-Austin, whose documentary Yizkor (Remembrance) also received the Gold Medal at the Student Academy Awards in June. Filmmaker Dustin Grella of the School of Visual Arts won a Golden Eagle for his animated documentary Prayers for Peace, which also screened at the Silverdocs Film Festival in June. Student filmmakers from several distinguished universities - including Columbia University, UCLA, Montana State University, the Dodge College at Chapman University, and the USC School of Cinematic Arts - also received 2010 Golden Eagle Awards.
Golden Eagle Award-winning films and programs ranged across topic and type, including History's series Pawn Stars, Creative Differences' and Discovery Channel's Mega Beasts: T-Rex of the Deep, the Sundance Channel's Brick City, and VH1 documentaries about Soul Train and Woodstock. The Spring 2010 CINE Golden Eagle Competition was a global event, recognizing filmmakers from Poland, Canada, Austria, the United Kingdom, Germany and Australia.
For a complete list of Golden Eagle Award-winning films, visit our website. You can also watch clips and trailers of some of the Golden Eagle Award-winning productions, and see production stills in a gallery on our Facebook page.
Thanks to everyone who entered, and congratulations to the Spring 2010 Golden Eagle Award recipients!
Anchor's Aweigh! Tips for Off-Shore Filmmakers

The opinions expressed in this article are not necessarily those of CINE and do not constitute legal advice.
Shooting a film and finding a location that has the right natural features, aesthetics or architecture to portray your vision can be challenging. It may be impossible to find just the right 17th century castle or tropical rain forest in the United States. Off-shore production locations may offer the best solution, but adequate pre-planning is critical.
THE HUMAN ELEMENT
Before traveling to another country, check for any travel restrictions that may affect your cast and crew. You will also need to consider the availability of acceptable food and water. Specific information by country is available on the U.S. Department of State's web site. This Internet resource provides passport information for U.S. and foreign citizens, travel warnings, immunization requirements, and where to access medical assistance and insurance. On larger productions, you may want to consider conferring with a local advocate, such as an embassy official, who can advise you and act as a liaison with the local government.
The 2010 CINE Awards Gala
La Maison Francaise at the Embassy of France hosted CINE's Annual Awards Gala on June 3rd, 2010, where a networking reception with hors d'oeuvres was followed by the ceremony honoring filmmakers and leaders for their work. The ceremony was hosted for the 19th year by NBC's Bob Dotson. PBS President & CEO Paula Kerger presented the CINE Lifetime Achievement Award to Susan Lacy, Creator and Executive Producer of WNET's American Masters Series. Johnathan Rodgers, Founder and President of TV One, received the CINE Leadership Award, presented by Royal Kennedy Rodgers. Erik Nelson, President of Creative Differences, an innovator in reality and documentary television, accepted CINE's Trailblazer Award from Clark Bunting, President of Discovery Channel. CINE Masters Series Awards were also presented to a handful of talented filmmakers, and Kim Spurlock, winner of CINE's Student Award of Excellence, received the Chubb/CINE Student Scholarship and the Kodak Film Award.
Many thanks to all of you who came out, and congratulations again to our winners!
